IN THEIR OWN WORDS: SPX 2006: One Exhibitor’s Experiences

Von Allan attended this year’s SPX show to promote his upcoming graphic novel, the road to god knows…. Was it a success? How did the new location compare to the old one? Will he ever fly from Canada to the States again?

The 2006 Small Press Expo has come and gone once again and I find myself feeling a little bittersweet now that it’s all over. This edition of SPX was a little bit different than those of recent vintage; the Expo moved to a larger venue in a very modern hotel in North Bethesda and so there was a sense that it was still trying to find its feet. Last year was my first show (and our first con as exhibitors) and my wife (Sam!) and I both felt a lot more confident going in. With SPX and APE under our belts we looked forward to really having a good time with this year’s Expo. Last year I felt a smidgen stressed showing early pages of my work to the public at large for the first time.

Read Part One of San Diego Comic Con from a New Publisher’s Perspective

Friday and Saturday were whirlwinds, so I’m just going to repay as much as I can recall:

Met cool people like Artist-whose-name-everyone-will-know-shortly Kody Chamberlain, Bendis board maniacs Shawn McManus and Tony Fleece, aforementioned The Beranek boys (TM-pending), the sick masterminds behind Trailer Park of Terror (the nicest guys on earth), and the mega-cool Kevin Eastman, who welcomed his first son into the world Saturday (Congrats, Kevin!), then I geeked the hell out for the rest of the Con.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS: San Diego Comic Con from a New Publisher’s Perspective - Part 1 of 2

Written by Steve Earnhart, Publisher of HARD-BOILED COMICS

Taking a cue from MEMENTO, Steve (publisher, creator, and writer of HARD-BOILED COMICS) Earnhart gives us his take on hitting the San Diego Comic Con as a first-time publisher promoting his upcoming title, HARD-BOILED COMICS due in stores this October.

Day one, Thursday, July 20: Derailed.

12:15am (Now Friday): Passed out fully clothed with the TV on after ingesting enough booze to kill a camel.

11:00pm: Much to my own personal disgust, I realize that two 64oz margaritas isn’t enough to quiet the beast within, so I knuckle-up and trudge over to the liquor store on Hotel Circle for a cold six pack of Budzo to finish up strong. Seems I wasn’t the only one with the bright idea, as the packie was packed with many other like-minded winners and the whole affair took about 45 minutes. Keep in mind the store is a mere ten-minute walk from my crappy room at the Days Inn. Another par. Read more

One of the most ridiculous online kerfuffles in the history of the internet was last year when one nerd who is particularly popular among his fellow nerds posted a lament that he was “bored with comics.” Bored with comics? Say what, now?
