VIZ MEDIA MAKES 2008 FREE COMIC BOOK DAY A MANGA DAY WITH SPECIAL FREE ISSUE OF SHONEN JUMP MAGAZINE           Special 32-Page Sampler Edition of Nation’s Most Popular Manga Anthology - SHONEN JUMP Magazine To Feature NARUTO, BLEACH and SLAM DUNK

San Francisco, CA, March 26, 2008 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry’s most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has announced its participation as a Gold Level Sponsor in the 2008 Free Comic Book Day, taking place May 3rd. VIZ Media is producing a special edition (rated “A” for All Ages) of SHONEN JUMP Magazine (rated ‘T’ for Teens) to be distributed for free at participating stores nationwide.

The annual occasion, developed by Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc., the world’s largest distributor of English-language comic books, is designed for comic book retailers across North America and around the world to offer a range of select titles for free to further spread awareness of new and upcoming series and highlight the diversity of the comics and manga (graphic novel) genres.

SHONEN JUMP will publish a special, free condensed issue of the magazine to appeal to new comic book fans as well as established manga readers. The SHONEN JUMP Free Comic Book Day issue will contain 32 action-packed pages including special previews of three of VIZ Media’s most exciting serialized series — NARUTO, BLEACH and the newly serialized SLAM DUNK — as well as coverage of many of the magazine’s other popular series such as ONE PIECE and YU YU HAKUSHO, and introduce new readers to the diverse array of content the magazine offers. Longtime SHONEN JUMP fans will also love the BLEACH poster included in this special edition.

SHONEN JUMP joins a select group of ten other preeminent publishers participating in Free Comic Book Day including Archie, Bongo, Dark Horse, DC, Dynamite, IDW, Image, Marvel and Virgin. For more information on Free Comic Book Day please visit www.freecomicbookday.com.

“Despite the massive popularity of manga in the United States, there is still a huge audience waiting to experience the range of unique art and compelling stories featured in these excellent Japanese comics, ” says Marc Weidenbaum, Editor-In- Chief of SHONEN JUMP. “By supporting Free Comic Book Day, we hope to get manga into as many hands as possible, and let American comic readers discover the pleasures of the ninja epic that is Masashi Kishimoto’s NARUTO, the soul-reaper action of Tite Kubo’s BLEACH, and the high-school hijinks of Takehiko Inoue’s SLAM DUNK.”

SHONEN JUMP, which celebrated its 5th anniversary earlier this year,
appeals to over 1.9 million readers monthly aged 12-17 - with an average monthly circulation of over 241,000.  SHONEN JUMP is the first place fans can read new chapters of the latest hit manga from Japan as titles such as NARUTO, BLEACH and ONE PIECE have two or more chapters regularly serialized each month in addition to product articles on a vast array of related video games, trading cards, animation and toys.  Ardent fans appreciate the easy to read and affordable presentations of a notable array of different genres, stories and art styles, yet the magazine still offers new readers the opportunity to ‘test’ several manga at once. For more information on SHONEN JUMP Magazine please visit www.shonenjump.com.

A Kuwaiti Political Satire by Naif Al-Mutawa

Don’t Hesitate..Segregate!
by Naif Al-Mutawa

Kuwait City, Kuwait

I just came back from New York and once again, I’ve gained weight. In the past I dined with Jenny Craig, sweated to The Oldies, weighed in with Weight Watchers and rowed enough oceans to charter the Queen Mary with Frequent Rower Miles. But try as I might to shed my unwanted weight, my aspirations collapse at the Ministry of the Menu.

Kuwaiti Satire Thankfully, I have finally found the cure. A very fine one. And it breaks the contentious Kuwaiti stalemate of proposed laws that would segregate the sexes, establish a national dress code, require government repayment of personal loans, and ban private swimming pools on public walkways, the ultimate impasse that led to the recent dissolution of Kuwait’s parliament.

Here’s my solution.

I want to eliminate obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, clogged arteries, and various cancers from my fellow Kuwaiti citizens. I want Kuwaitis to live longer, healthier lives. After all, I’m a high-minded guy, a regular man of the people.

My method is simple, really. With your help and your vote, I will gain control of parliament in the new elections and take personal responsibility out of the obesity equation. I will substitute new laws for the personal responsibility and self-discipline our forefathers displayed that allowed them to survive an inhospitable environment until our oil revenues made air conditioning, desalinated water and affordable guest workers possible. I will replace their storied personal ethics with laws that will solve all our health problems.

First, I will close all the fast-food restaurants, fried chicken joints and coffee shops that serve high calorie snacks. Once I conquer the fast food devils, I will attack their suppliers. The Sultan Center, Kuwait’s locally owned premier supplier of supermarket items will be a sitting duck. I will tap into the envy we Kuwaitis have for those among us who succeed in spite of our sometimes arcane business climate. Once I strip their shelves of food their customers want to buy, I will focus on the food co-ops and rid their stores of anything high in fat, calories and taste.

With The Sultan Center and the co-ops under my boot, I will make sure their shelves are again filled with food that, for a small fee, I will personally guarantee to be safe, calorie correct and fat and taste free. I will do this by ensuring that only foods grown on farms under my ‘personal supervision’ will be allowed. It’s not going to be an easy job and personal financing will never be enough. Surely, my efforts on behalf of the people should be financed and rewarded by the new parliament we will elect.

Be assured that we will surround our cause with the highest moral authority and religious flags. Teams of experts are currently at work researching the necessary citations and passages to support our cause. They have already discovered that “personal responsibility” is an anagram for “Israeli person: plot by sin.” If you don’t believe me, just rearrange the letters. Uncovering Zionist conspiracies is another reason my creative genius is needed in parliament. I promise to dedicate a large proportion of the oil surplus to the uncovering of such hidden messages. But we must act quickly before the evildoers can convince the lesser informed among us that personal responsibility is a requirement of personal freedoms. We must defend ourselves from the encroachment of Western dietary decay before it is too late.

When I was in college I ate myself sick. While others studied, I was at restaurants. I couldn’t get enough calories. Believe me, I know the evils of food. After graduating college, I studied for a PhD in psychology. Even then, I saw eating as nothing more than entertainment for the taste buds. But it was after receiving an MBA from a prestigious business school that I really saw the Light. The same Light that I am intent on blinding you with until you can see nothing else and until the fields of the new Al-Mutawa Farms are bursting with produce and our coffers are as full as a politician’s promises are empty.

Please join my campaign to outlaw personal responsibility. Help me make personal responsibility a function of government. Together we can take Kuwait back to a time when the only McDonalds on Earth were roaming the Scottish highlands.

I will share more of my plan with you as soon as financing can be secured for the orchards and farmland necessary to complete our work. Meanwhile all this talk about food has left me hungry with no alternative than to catch the next flight to New York.

Dayan from Dark Horse

(Courtesy of Dark Horse)

Dyin’ for Dayan (Dai-On) Akido Ikeda’s international sensation Dayan is finally available in the

United States! The mischievous cat Dayan has already captured the hearts and minds of

Japan, spawning over thirty books, a theme park, museums, and stores dedicated entirely to the fictional world where he resides, Wachifield! Discover the phenomenon this spring with the first four books, published by Dark Horse in handsome hardcover.
Wachifield is an enchanted, anthropomorphic world conceived by author Akiko Ikeda during her childhood—a mystical universe where plants and animals talk, and with their words teach classic tales of wisdom played out in fun, heartwarming scenes and through vivid artwork. Her whimsical and timeless illustrations have garnered international recognition, and her intricate world continues to expand due to her nearly limitless imagination.  Dayan, the central character and favorite resident of the town of Tachiel, is an adventurous cat whose curiosity often leads him into fantastical adventures. Luckily, he has the support and help of his friends, who include Marcy the dependable bunny, and the hard-drinking alligator Nbah. Follow Dayan and his courageous cronies as they outwit a coven of angry witches, a devilish forest nymph, and even their own shadows!  Along the way they manage to make new friends, experience the snow magic of the Eurocka festival, and make a rainy Thursday into an event to remember! Though originally written for children, adults and fans of Japanese culture will love these stories for their deceptively complex narrative, darker undertones, and alcoholic alligators.    Dark Horse proudly presents, for the first time in English, The Dayan Collection. The first four volumes—Dayan’s Birthday, Thursday Rainy Party, White Eurocka, and Chibikuro Party—will be released in the states on April 23, 2008, for a retail price of $9.95.

TypeRacks

Behind the Scenes at the Studio - The owner of a printer here in Lafayette called Tribune Printing passed away a few months ago, I had done some printing with him in the past and I had a great deal of respect for the work he did and the techniques he applied. In a world of digital technology, he kept many of the old techniques alive, woodblock printing, stat camera, paste up, etc. Truly a lost art form. I learned quite a bit from Mr. Cliff and always enjoyed our sidewalk chats. You can see a photo of his print building in the CBR studio tour I did a while back. It’s in the second photo in section (J) of the tour.

After his death, his wife decided to sell the business and the building, so it had to be cleaned out. She was selling off a few things and invited me in to have a look around. From her kindness, my studio received a nice upgrade this past week in the form of several vintage type cases which still include some printing blocks, dies and wood type blocks. When you hear the terms “upper case” and “lower case” this is what it’s all about. The led type was already claimed, but the racks are beautiful and highly functional for a comic book artist.

Two of the cases, as seen in the first two photos, have drawers that are angled at about 25 for easy access from the side. Perfect size for 11×17 comic book pages. The third case is a bit larger and still has many of the original items in the drawers. I’ll eventually pick up a letter press, so these will absolutely find new life in the coming years. I also picked up a nice drafting tape dispenser made of solid steel, this thing gives the cliche “they don’t make ‘em like that anymore” new respect.

And finishing off the upgrade are two vintage black chairs with a great scoop shape to them. Extremely comfortable and they look amazing. I’ve already caught a few minutes sleep in one of these.

So have a closer look, this stuff is a step back in time and a look at an amazing history of print technology. And a great addition to the studio.

PBM

Comic Book Resources has just just posted a nice write up about the book with some lettered pages!

Pretty, Baby, Machine - (Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson, Machine Gun Kelly) from Shadowline via Image comics. Just wrapped up the covers for issues 2 and 3, and Issue 1 is still available for preorder from Previews (Diamond code MAR082067). So get those orders in. Here’s a peek at the cover for issue 2 featuring Al Capone.

If you’re interested in 1930’s gritty crime drama, make sure you add the book to your pull list and pre-order. I’ve dropped in 5 full pages of art, consider it a bribe to ensure you preorder the book.

IndyCards

Indiana Jones Heritage Sketch Cards - It looks like the Indiana Jones sketch cards I did are officially in the packs and on the shelf and a few have already made it on eBay. So for those of you into collecting cards, be on the lookout.

I’m told by TOPPS that I’ll be getting my 6 cards back from the set sometime this coming week, so if anyone is interested in those, drop me a line and let me know. I don’t know which cards are coming back, I’ll post an update with scans as soon as they show up. Just for clarification, I’m not involved with any of these current eBay auctions for Indy cards, they’re listed by the people who are pulling the cards from the packs.

Artcotic

Limited Edition T-Shirt at ARTCOTIC - Artcotic is featuring a limited edition T-Shirt by yours truly, only 500 being made. The site also features shirts by guys like Bill Sienkiewicz, Steve Niles and even director David Slade. Artcotic is really a fantastic idea and the designs are top notch. Highly recommended.
Conventions

Summer Convention Update - The summer convention season is quickly approaching. Here’s a quick rundown of my convention schedule, I do keep an updated list on my website so check there for updates and details.

CAPE : May 3, 2008 : CAPE is a fantastic show in Dallas hosted by Zeus Comics (map). Last year was my first time attending and I had a blast! I’ll also be participating in the live art show the night before. So mark your calendar, this is a show you won’t want to miss.

Heroes Con : June 20 - 22, 2008 : Really looking forward to my first stop in Charlotte, NC at the Heroes Con! Heroes Con has become widely recognized as the most fun, laid back, family-friendly and comics-centric convention in the industry. You can find out more about Heroes Con at www.heroesonline.com.

San Diego Comic-Con : July 23 - 27, 2008 : Comic-Con is the big daddy of the convention season and it’s bigger and badder every single year. Crowd estimates were in the range of 120,000 people this past year. I am planning to be at the convention and will likely be available for signings with publishers, but as of now I’m undecided if I’ll be booking a table. I’ll update this info as soon as I know for sure.

Wizard World Texas
: November 6 - 8, 2008 : Wizard Texas is quickly becoming one of my favorite cons. The crowd is a little smaller, but the energy is great and the pace is just about perfect for squeezing in commissions, sketches and a bit of time to sit and chat with people about comics. Something that’s missing from the larger fast pace conventions.

Modbook

Check Out This Month’s Issue of Create Magazine Buyers Guide - My Beowulf cover art is featured in this month’s print version of Create Magazine Buyers Guide in the Axiotron Modbook ad. I was loaned a Modbook prototype for a couple of weeks and it happened to be while I was coloring the Beowulf cover for HarperCollins, so I think it’s officially the first published artwork done on the Modbook.

On a similar note, I’ll be making a cameo in next month’s MacLife Magazine as well. After really digging on the script writing program Montage for a few weeks I shot them an email thanking them for building an awesome app, and we hooked up at MacWorld in San Francisco a few times and I gave them some feedback based on my experience with the program. They asked if I’d send a few quotes about what I liked most, and one of those quotes made it into the MacLife ad. Kinda cool, yes?

ebay

Original Art for Sale - Bookmark this link. We’ll be adding original art on a weekly basis. We’re in the early stages of setting up an eBay store, so bookmark the link and check back often for new art listings. As always, if you’re interested in any page from any project that isn’t listed, let me know and I’ll see if it’s available.
ShoutOuts

Shout Outs: Here’s a quick list of things I’m digging, projects I’m interested in and other vague and unusual items.

Loving Joshua Dysart and Paul Azaceta on B.P.R.D. 1946; and Mike Mignola and Jason Alexandar on Abe Sapien: The Drowning. Both from Dark Horse Comics.

Tomm Coker killed on The Ride from 12 Gauge / Image Comics. Track this one down ASAP.

Brubaker and Lark are monumental on Daredevil.

Currently re-reading my copy of the Absolute Watchmen hardcover.

Indy Comic News is an indy friendly comic news site. I’m optimistic.

My pal Hickman has a preview up of his new project called Pax Romana, very cool stuff.

I just subscribed to Comic Foundry Magazine. Could this be the perfect mag to fill the massive void between Wizard and The Comics Journal?

How To Make Comics is an good idea, I’m watching with great interest.

Electrolytic Etching is in my future.

Comic Book Resources has been doing a series of studio tours. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the full list including one I did a few months ago. This month’s tour is the amazing Tommy Lee Edwards.

Anyone know Japanese? These look amazing.

I’ve got a lot of original art to frame, so I’m loving FrameUSA.

Been working on my writing chops so I’ve been studying screenplays.

Speaking of writing, check out these free writing courses.

I used to use Color Blender a whole lot, but lately I’ve been developing color swatches with Kuler.
