30 Days of Night World Lives On in New Comic Book Series and Movie Theaters in October

IDW Publishing reinvents the horrifying world of vampires in new comic book series, 30 Days of Night: Beyond Barrow

San Diego, CA (August 21, 2007)—Those anticipating the release of 30 Days of Night to the big screen this October 19, 2007 will also have a chance to enjoy the further expansion of the 30 Days world and characters through IDW Publishing’s horrific new comic book, 30 Days of Night: Beyond Barrow.

The much-anticipated motion picture from Sony Pictures, directed by David Slade, best known for directing Hard Candy, and starring leading Hollywood actor Josh Hartnett, is based on IDW Publishing’s original 30 Days of Night graphic novel, which launched in 2002. The terrifying story details a small Alaskan town—Barrow—that is overrun by vampires during 30 sunless days of the harsh northern winter. When released, the horrifying vampire tale shocked the comic book world and quickly became a bona-fide smash hit.

With two direct graphic novel sequels and assorted spin-off series and prose novels since the original, Beyond Barrow picks up where the ongoing story have left off. This time a new creature is lurking that is preying on both humans and vampires. “By introducing a new threat even to the vampires, this story takes the whole idea further than it’s ever gone before,” says Chris Ryall, publisher and editor-in-chief at IDW Publishing.

Most notable about Beyond Barrow is the fact that series co-creator/writer Steve Niles has paired up with legendary artist Bill Sienkiewicz to create this terrifying new three-part series. Sienkiewicz, an acclaimed multimedia artist who has enjoyed a strong comic book following since the early 1980s, was a major influence on artist Ben Templesmith, who created the art for the original 30 Days of Night. For this newest launch, Sienkiewicz is doing fully-painted covers and artwork.

The first installment of the three-issue, 32-page comics will be in stores on September 19, 2007, just in time to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the original release of 30 Days of Night. The following two issues will be released in subsequent months in comic book stores; call 1-800-comic-books to find a store near you.

Field of THREE in Platinum’s Comic Book Challenge

(From a Platinum Studios press release:)

FIELD NARROWS TO THREE IN PLATINUM STUDIOS’

COMIC BOOK CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY AT&T

Fans Invited to Vote for Winner on the AT&T blue room Site

SAN ANTONIO and LOS ANGELES, Aug. 15, 2007 — AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and Platinum Studios , Inc. have announced that three aspiring comic book creators on the cusp of winning a coveted multimedia development and publishing deal have just one more hurdle to go — an online public vote — as the last phase begins of the second annual Platinum Studios ’ Comic Book Challenge, presented by AT&T and sponsored by AT&T Universal Card.

The finalists are: Jorge Vega from Brockton , Mass. , for “Gunplay;” Shawn Granger from La Verne , Calif. , for “Grey Shades;” and Josiah Grahn from Richmond, Ky., for “Banana Barry.”

Through midnight on Sunday, Aug. 26, fans can check out the comic creators and their concepts, view live pitch footage and cast ballots for their favorite new comic book idea on the AT&T blue room (http://www.attblueroom.com) to determine which of the three finalists will walk away the winner.

This is the finalists’ last obstacle in their bid to break into the comic book industry by winning the contest. The challenge has included an open call for submissions, from which 50 entrants were selected to advance; a pitch to industry experts, who narrowed the field from 50 entrants to 10; and an initial online public vote that whittled the field from 10 entrants to three.

Comic book fans can also access video back-stories, footage of the live pitches and “confessionals” featuring the top 10 entrants — including the three finalists — from wireless and TV screens on AT&T U-verseSM TV, AT&T HomezoneSM and MobiTV on Mobility services. The content is being written, directed and produced by AT&T’s expanding in-house creative group and is being distributed through support from AT&T Universal Card.

“The level of competition has been intense this year,” said Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, chairman of Platinum Studios . “The top 10 entrants should be extremely proud of their accomplishments. We are eagerly awaiting the public vote for the winner of
Platinum Studios ’ Comic Book Challenge.”

“Interest in Platinum Studios ’ Comic Book Challenge on the AT&T blue room has been fantastic, and voting during the first round surpassed our expectations,” said Michael Goldfine, head of development and production of AT&T Entertainment Services. “We know that soon someone’s dream will be fulfilled, and we are enjoying being a part of that accomplishment.”

The winner of the 2007 Platinum Studios ’ Comic Book Challenge presented by AT&T will be formally announced on Tuesday, Aug. 28, and the winner’s comic book or graphic novel will be published and premiered at a major Wizard World convention in 2008.

Last year’s Comic Book Challenge winner, D.J. Coffman, has earned fan accolades and winning reviews for the sold-out debut of his comic book “Hero By Night,” which chronicles the story of Jack King, a young man who discovers the secret lair of a 1950’s superhero in his new apartment building and must decide whether to use the hero’s source of power to become a superhero himself.

The AT&T blue room brings together gaming enthusiasts, music fans, tailgaters and the Hollywood-minded through a single online portal housing AT&T’s unique sports, music, gaming and entertainment content.

Endeavor Agency helped broker the relationship between AT&T and Platinum Studios .

meltworm
The Melt Worm
Find a hill. Hunt through the tufts of golden grass until you find a medium-sized rock. Good. Now, turn it over. I know, I know. Gross! A whole world of writhing muck just awoke from a long sleep. There in the middle…see that greenish wriggling creature trying to burrow downward? Grab it in the middle with your index finger and thumb. Excellent. Now, whatever you do, BE CAREFUL. They’re not called melt worms for nothing.

Note the worm’s glossy scales and tissue thin, yet extremely tough, skin. Glimmering veins pulse below its surface. Oh…you noticed! The melt worm has no face. It’s entire head is a fleshy knob. All of its survival needs are satisfied through the sensory capabilities of the worm’s bulbous head.

Let’s observe more closely. Gently squeeze the worm’s body. See how its head now has a soft orange glow. While squeezing, tap the head with a finger tip. ONLY TAP. Hot as a coal pulled from a fire pit! Glowing with such heat, the melt worm tests its surroundings. It can sense the distance and motion of nearby objects. It identifies a potential food source by testing how it reacts to the heat. If it moves toward the heat, it’s most likely a good candidate for dinner. What’s that? How does it eat? Great question.

To understand how the melt worm obtains nutrients, we’ll have to squeeze a bit harder. Do so now. As you can see, the melt worm’s head is far brighter, almost white, with a sheen to it. If you touched the gleaming bulb at this point, it would burn your skin and we’d be going to see Aunt Nelly in the infirmary. At this intensity level, the melt worm can kill insects instantly. The sheen you observed on the worm’s head is an enzyme the worm secretes to liquify the dead bug. Once dissolved, food can be absorbed through the melt worm’s skin.

Let’s complete one more experiment on our friend the melt worm. For what we’re about to do, use extreme caution. At the count of three, pinch its body hard enough to feel your fingers touch. Don’t worry, the worm’s tubular physique is quite resilient. It shouldn’t burst open. Here we go. 1…2……3….Go! Good job, but do not look directly at the head for at least 5 seconds.

Though unharmed, the momentary distress was enough to trigger the worm’s defense mechanism. This means radiating the most scorching, brilliant light possible from its protuberant head. At this magnitude, this most unusual worm can even melt some stone. With such power, the melt worm need never fear being caught between a rock and a hard place.

That concludes our fundamental examination of the melt worm. You’ll want to return him to his home under the rock. The melt worm is an interesting creature to observe, but, as you can imagine, makes a poor choice for a pet.

LC Creators Burning the Midnight Oil
A Sneak Peek from the Light Children Workshop

Imagine a room draped in cobwebs. In the corner, a table the size of a draw bridge basks in candle glow. Dried vines twist around the table’s legs in dense braids. Loose piles of color-splattered paper cover the wooden surface. Sketches, outlines, notes, and maps mingle with illustrations to create a patchwork table cloth of heaped art.

Two empty goblets rest on coasters make of burrsak pelts. A last swallow of dark wine rests in the bottom of a hand-blown bottle. Bones from last week’s dinner lie on a tarnished platter. Over the strewn artwork, two twitching figures work feverishly, fingers stained in ink. The pages of Light Children: Book One - Invalid are coming to life.

This month, Andy and Kyle lay down their quills and brushes to bring you a sampling of images from the latest pages of Light Children. Enjoy. Visit the site and click on the ‘Sneak Peek at Chapter One’ banner for the latest art in development.
