REVIEW: EVERY GIRL IS THE END OF THE WORLD FOR ME by Jeffrey Brown

Reviewed by Matt Butcher / Writer for Independent Propaganda

Comics do not have to be about spandexed superheroes all the time. Some comics can tell more of a story about real life than any prose ever could. Jeffrey Browns mini-comic called Every Girl is the End of the World for Me, published by Top Shelf Productions, is a sheer delight that shines a spotlight on the quirks of dating in the eyes of a twenty-something illustrator.

REVIEW: WHAT WERE THEY THINKING #1 by Various

Reviewed by Matt Butcher / Writer for Independent Propaganda

Old comics! Bad humor! Keith Giffen’s name on the cover! What more could you ask for? They could offer to sell Giffen’s snotrag in a direct-bagged edition and I would buy two copies: one to open and one to keep sealed forever and ever. Thankfully this comic is a hell of a lot funnier than a snotrag!

What Were They Thinking: Some People Never Learn #1 from Boom! Studios explodes on the scene with probably the best comic read I have had in years. I laughed out loud! Read more

REVIEW: PIRANESE: THE PRISON PLANET by Milo Manara

PIRANESE: THE PRISON PLANET
by Milo Manara
$14.95
Heavy Metal

If I were giving PIRANESE a cover blurb, it’d be a light, sexy, sci-fi adventure. Brainless wouldn’t be entirely unfair, either. But no one really reads Manara for the intellectual engagement, right?

The plot, as it were, is as thin as a debutante in bikini season. The totalitarian galactic government has genetically engineered everyone- or all the humans, at least- to make them pliable, happy, peaceful morons concerned primarily with fashion and farting. It could be argued that that this doesn’t exactly represent a coup in biological science. The genetic throwbacks, or savages, are classified as criminals, sterilized, and dumped on the prison planet Piranese, from which there is no escape, which means that someone will escape very soon. That someone is our hero, a nameless Manara girl slinky of body and saucy of mouth, whogets caught up in the struggle between the governmental goons and the DNA-challenged rebels.

But seriously, you don’t care about any of that, do you? This isn’t an arty European comic from Humanoids, this is Manara. Read more

NEWS: Going to the San Diego Comic Con?

Posted by Wesley Craig Green / Head Cheese at Independent Propaganda

Independent Propaganda is looking for people who are heading to this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Regardless if you are an indy creator/ publisher or a fan of independent comics, we would love to post some reports with an eye on independent comics, web comics, and mini-comics from Comic Con. We’re not interested in hearing about the Big Two’s onslaught of new projects, exclusives, and such. We would like to hear what independent comics premiered, which indy books have a buzz, etc.

For indy creators/publishers, your reports would be a great opportunity to promote yourself and your work. For independent comic fans, it’s a great way to hook up with the lady folk.

If you are interested, send an email to let us know who you are and to also ask any questions. And yes, we encourage pictures- even of sweaty, middle-age men in tight Flash costumes.
